Use of Bisphosphonates (i.e.
Fosamax, Actonel, Aredia, Zometa, Boniva):
•Bisphosphonates are widely used in the management of metastatic disease to the bone and in the treatment of osteoporosis. Over the past few years a cluster of patients have been found to have dying jaw bone, better known in the medical community as osteonecrosis, after dental surgery. A common factor in those patients was the use of bisphosphonates. The largest number of patients reviewed were using the IV form of the drugs but there are some documented cases of the problem occurring in patients using the oral form. Discontinuing this medication may not help because the affects of the drugs are long term.
•It is very important that you advise your dentist, oral surgeon, and other healthcare providers of prior or present use of bisphosphonates before treatment. As your healthcare provider, we feel it is our responsibility to keep you informed about possible long term problems that can occur due
to surgical treatment after the use of bisphosphonates.
